Fragments 1-4 (…the river in the sand), is an experimentation on different surfaces, construction materials, and gendered objects the mixing of pigment into the material appearance, quality, and color of brown skin, both referencing and utilizing as a literal material practice the linguistic turn in June Jordan’s Ceiling/Sky of metonymy (as in, “I felt the water on dry land / I found the river in the sand” as an affective approach to decarceration (as in, “I am the way I will / be free”).
