Portrait of al is a depiction of an subcutaneous hormone injection. Through attention to texture, obstruction, effacement, and layering, I am seeking to bring forward trans of color life as more than state fictions, rather, as materially, poetically, and lyricalaly ontological experiences. In the words of Kevin Quashie, it is an attempt to “[imply] a full range of human life: that we don’t know the subject just by looking at him or noticing the artifact; that his life is wide-open and possible; that his life is more than familiar characterizations of victimization by or triumph over racism.”
